Universal Geneve Uni Compas "Big Eye"
The Universal Genève Uni-Compax “Big Eye” is one of the most visually distinctive and coveted chronographs produced by the brand during the golden age the brand in the 1960s. Celebrated for its bold, asymmetrical sub-dial configuration and utilitarian design, this model has earned legendary status among UG collectors as well as vintage chronograph collectors.
The watch features a 37mm stainless steel case, large for its era, with long faceted lugs and a slim profile that wears elegantly while maintaining a sporty character. The moniker “Big Eye” refers to the oversized 45-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock — dramatically larger than the small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock — creating a striking and immediately recognisable dial layout. The black matte dial further enhances the watch’s legibility and presence, contrasted by white printed tachymeter and minute tracks.
The engine behind the Uni-Compax is the manual-winding caliber 85, based on the renowned Valjoux 23 — a reliable and well-finished column-wheel chronograph movement. The movement is housed within a screw-down caseback, with Universal Genève signature along with reference and serial numbers engraved on the back.
