A Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Platinum ref.191.062 "Darth"
A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 "Darth", reference 191.062, is a modern icon of German watchmaking, revered for its stark monochromatic aesthetic, architectural dial layout, and uncompromising craftsmanship. Nicknamed the “Darth” by collectors, this rare configuration of the Lange 1 pairs a platinum case with a black dial, resulting in one of the most visually striking and collectible executions of the model.
Introduced in the mid-2000s and produced in very limited numbers, the "Darth" was the first Lange 1 to feature this dramatic black-on-silver combination, a marked departure from the more classical silver or champagne dials typically associated with the reference. The 38.5mm case is made entirely from 950 platinum, featuring satin-brushed casebands and polished lugs and bezel — a refined contrast that enhances the sculptural quality of the watch.
The matte black dial is asymmetrically balanced, with Lange’s signature off-center time display, outsized date at 1 o’clock, power reserve indicator ("AUF/AB") at 3 o’clock, and small seconds at 5 o’clock. The use of white gold hands and applied markers maintains great legibility while preserving the minimalist, monochrome palette.
Powering the Lange 1 “Darth” is the in-house Lange caliber L901.0, a manually wound movement featuring a 3/4 German silver plate, hand-engraved balance cock, twin mainspring barrels, and swan-neck regulator. It offers a power reserve of 72 hours (indicated on the dial) and is finished to Lange’s upmost standards — visible through a sapphire caseback.
The Lange 1 "Darth" was quietly discontinued after a short production run, making it one of the most elusive modern Lange watches. Its rare pairing of a platinum case with a black dial, combined with the enduring prestige of the Lange 1 lineage, has secured its status as a grail piece for many Lange collectors.
